House Renovation Campaign
History of House Expansion
The Epsilon Pi chapter of Sigma Nu first moved into its iconic home at 601 Gayley Avenue in 1940. The house has undergone two major expansions since then. The first, in 1954, added the “New Wing,” a second-story addition above the kitchen and dining areas. The second occurred in 1965, with the construction of the ground-level addition along Strathmore Avenue, affectionately known as “The Hole.”
In the summer of 2018, the “New Wing” was completely gutted and rebuilt, creating seven newly configured bedrooms (two triples and five doubles), a modern bathroom, and upgraded laundry appliances. Each room was equipped with individual air conditioning units, closets, drawers, beds, and mattresses. The following summer, in 2019, the “Old Wing” underwent a similar transformation, resulting in the addition of eight new bedrooms, as well as updated bathroom and laundry facilities.
In 2024 a new steel sundeck was completed, replacing the wooden structure built in 1985 and connecting the “New Wing” and “Old Wing” above the courtyard. Underneath a portion of this structure, a new kitchenette was installed, providing added convenience while allowing the primary kitchen to be better secured for health and safety purposes.
Renovation Campaign Status
Since 2010, over $3 million has been invested in renovating our historic fraternity house, making its 42 beds highly sought after. While many other UCLA fraternities have chosen to demolish and rebuild their chapter houses, our Alumni Board takes pride in preserving the iconic exterior of 601 Gayley Avenue. However, these recent upgrades have required debt financing, which we hope will inspire further contributions from individual alumni.
Since 2016, nearly 300 brothers have donated to the chapter, with gifts ranging from $50 to $2,000,000. These gifts ensure that the Epsilon Pi chapter of Sigma Nu continues to thrive as an integral part of the UCLA experience. As we approach our Centennial Celebration in 2030, we encourage all alumni to help “burn the debt” and secure our chapter’s future.
